The United States Department of Defense confirmed that American naval forces intercepted an oil tanker allegedly linked to Venezuela during maritime operations in the Indian Ocean. Officials stated that the vessel was suspected of violating sanctions related to the transport of petroleum products.

According to defense officials, the tanker was boarded for inspection after intelligence indicated possible efforts to obscure its ownership and cargo origin. The crew was reported to have cooperated with naval personnel during the review process. Authorities did not immediately disclose the final disposition of the vessel or its cargo.

The United States maintains sanctions on Venezuela’s energy sector, citing concerns about governance and democratic standards. Washington has argued that enforcement actions are intended to restrict revenue streams that could be used for purposes contrary to regional ility.

Venezuelan officials criticized the interception, describing it as an unlawful interference with commercial shipping and a violation of international maritime norms. They called for diplomatic engagement rather than coercive measures.

Maritime security analysts noted that enforcement of energy related sanctions increasingly extends into key global shipping lanes, raising complex legal and geopolitical questions. The incident reflects ongoing tensions surrounding sanctions policy and international trade routes.
