Trump Signals Progress on Iran Talks Amid Conflicting Reports and Oil Market Volatility

Donald Trump said Monday that “things are going very well” regarding Iran following his announcement of a five day pause on potential strikes against Iranian power plants. The statement came shortly after he revealed ongoing talks with Tehran intended to resolve hostilities in the Middle East.

Trump made the comments to AFP by telephone from his Mar a Lago residence in Palm Beach Florida, reinforcing his earlier post on Truth Social. He said the past two days had seen “very good and productive conversations” and instructed the Department of War to suspend any military action for five days while discussions continue.

The announcement followed a tense period in which Trump had issued a two day ultimatum demanding that Iran reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz or face s on energy infrastructure. Tehran has partially closed the strait in retaliation for US and Israeli strikes, escalating global concerns over oil supply and energy prices.

Despite Trump’s statements, Iranian media reported that no negotiations were underway, with Iran denying talks and claiming the US president’s statements were aimed at calming global energy markets. The conflicting reports have contributed to volatility in oil markets, which have been under pressure from the ongoing Gulf tensions and fears of supply disruptions.

Trump’s move comes amid growing domestic political pressure, as rising fuel costs have become a key concern for Americans ahead of the midterm elections in November. Analysts note that the five day pause allows room for diplomacy while attempting to ease both geopolitical and economic pressures on the US administration.

The next few days will be closely watched by global markets and policymakers as the situation develops, with the potential for further escalation or progress depending on how talks, if any, proceed between Washington and Tehran.
