The United Kingdom has announced plans to send the naval destroyer HMS Dragon to the Middle East as part of efforts to protect commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The British Ministry of Defence confirmed on Saturday that the deployment is part of preparations for a future multinational security mission led jointly by the UK and France.

According to British officials, the move is aimed at strengthening confidence among global shipping operators and ensuring safer passage through one of the world’s most important trade routes. The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical channel for global energy supplies, with a significant portion of the world’s oil exports normally passing through the narrow waterway.

Military discussions involving more than 44 countries were held in London in April to plan security operations for the region. Reports indicate that around 40 nations have agreed to participate in the proposed mission to secure maritime navigation and support mine clearance activities once tensions ease.

The situation in the Gulf has become increasingly tense following the outbreak of conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran earlier this year. Iran responded by restricting movement through the Strait of Hormuz, causing major disruptions in global oil markets and increasing fuel prices worldwide. The United States later imposed a blockade on Iranian ports, further escalating tensions.

Fresh clashes were reported on Friday after a US fighter jet disabled two Iranian flagged tankers accused of violating the naval blockade. Iran condemned the action and launched retaliatory s shortly afterward. Additional confrontations were also reported overnight in the strategic waterway, where Iran has attempted to impose tolls on foreign vessels as part of its broader regional strategy.

Global leaders continue to call for calm as fears grow over the impact of prolonged inility on international trade and energy supplies.
