Fubara Still in PDP, Says Umar Sani, Despite Convention Absence and Political Tensions

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Umar Sani has clarified that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara remains a member of the party, despite recent political drama and his absence from the PDP’s national convention.

In an interview, Sani addressed questions about Fubara’s no show at the Ibadan convention, saying the event was open to all party members and attendance was not mandatory. He dismissed suggestions that the party should have reached out to Fubara personally, explaining that invitations were extended to everyone equally.

Sani suggested that Fubara is facing political pressure designed to push him away from active participation. However, he emphasized that the governor has not publicly declared any intention to leave the PDP.

“His photo was included in the convention programme because he hasn’t said he’s leaving,” Sani explained. “Unlike the Taraba State Governor, who has openly stated he’s moving to the APC, Fubara hasn’t made such a move.”

He added that until Fubara makes a clear statement about his party status, the PDP continues to count him as one of its own. “He’s still with us unless he says otherwise,” Sani said.

On whether the party should have contacted Fubara before the convention, Sani responded, “It’s a general invitation. Members can choose to attend or not. There was no need for a personal call.”

Sani’s comments come amid growing speculation about Fubara’s political future, but for now, the PDP maintains that he’s still part of the fold.
