Trump Administration Moves to Revive Denaturalisation Policy for Citizenship Fraud Cases

The administration of former US President Donald Trump has announced plans to revoke the citizenship of naturalised Americans found to have committed fraud during their immigration process, according to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.

Blanche stated in an interview with CBS News that individuals who obtained citizenship through deception should not be protected under the law, arguing that fraudulent acquisition of citizenship undermines the integrity of the immigration system.

He defended the proposed enforcement approach, saying that dishonesty in the naturalisation process should not be tolerated and that citizenship obtained under false pretences could be subject to legal review and revocation.

The policy direction signals a renewed emphasis on denaturalisation efforts within the US justice system, particularly targeting cases where applicants are suspected of providing false information during immigration or citizenship procedures.

Denaturalisation, the legal process of stripping citizenship from naturalised individuals, has traditionally been applied in limited circumstances such as terrorism cases, war crimes, or proven immigration fraud. Legal experts and civil rights groups have previously warned that expanding its use could raise concerns about due process and potentially affect immigrant communities more broadly.

The administration has not disclosed the number of cases currently under review or the specific criteria that would trigger citizenship revocation under the proposed approach.

The announcement adds to ongoing debates in the United States over immigration enforcement, citizenship rights, and the balance between national security and civil liberties as political attention on immigration policy continues to grow.
