President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved Nigeria’s hosting of the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly and the 2026 CAF Awards Ceremony.
The approval was confirmed on Tuesday by the Director of Communications of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ademola Olajire.
According to Olajire, President Tinubu made the declaration during the Africa Forward Summit held in Nairobi after meeting with Patrice Motsepe and other top football officials.
He explained that Nigeria’s selection reflects increasing confidence in the country’s ability to successfully host major continental sporting events. Discussions during the meeting reportedly focused on football development, sports infrastructure, and strengthening partnerships across African football.
Among those present at the meeting were Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, and former NFF President Amaju Pinnick.
Also in attendance was CAF Acting Secretary General Samson Adamu, who participated in discussions concerning preparations for future continental football programmes.
The 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly is scheduled to hold in October and is expected to attract major football administrators and stakeholders from across Africa. Participants will include presidents of CAF’s 54 member associations, representatives of zonal football unions, and senior officials involved in football governance on the continent.
The annual gathering remains one of CAF’s most important meetings for discussing football administration, policy decisions, and the future of African football.
Nigeria will also host the 2026 CAF Awards Ceremony, an event that celebrates outstanding achievements by players, coaches, teams, and administrators in African football.
Football stakeholders believe hosting both events will further strengthen Nigeria’s image as a leading destination for major sporting events in Africa.
