Supreme Court Reserves Judgment in PDP Crisis Appeals

Nigeria’s apex court, the Supreme Court of Nigeria, on Wednesday reserved judgment in a series of appeals and cross appeals arising from the ongoing leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party.

The decision followed the adoption of final arguments by all parties involved in the case, which has significantly impacted the internal structure of the opposition party. Earlier rulings by the Federal High Court in Abuja, delivered by Justices Omotosho and Lifu and later upheld by the Court of Appeal, had nullified the PDP’s Ibadan convention and affirmed the suspension of several key party officials.

Among those affected by the rulings are Samuel Anyanwu and A K Ajibade, whose suspensions became central to the legal dispute. Dissatisfied with the lower courts’ decisions, the PDP filed an appeal at the Supreme Court, arguing that the matter concerns internal party affairs and falls outside the jurisdiction of the courts.

On the other hand, the respondents, led by Anyanwu, submitted a cross appeal, seeking to overturn aspects of the judgment that upheld the suspension of some party members.

Reacting after the court session, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, confirmed that all parties had presented and adopted their legal processes. He stated that the court would communicate a later date for the delivery of judgment.

Ememobong urged party members to remain steadfast, expressing confidence that the apex court would deliver a ruling that strengthens democratic principles and prevents any drift toward a one party system.

The outcome of the case is expected to have far reaching implications for the PDP’s leadership structure and Nigeria’s broader political landscape, as stakeholders await the final decision.
