Severe Flooding in South Africa Displaces Thousands After Heavy Rains

South Africa is battling severe flooding after days of heavy rainfall caused rivers to overflow, damaging infrastructure and forcing thousands of residents to evacuate their homes. Emergency services were deployed across several affected provinces to assist displaced families and assess damage.

Authorities said homes, roads and bridges were washed away in low lying areas, cutting off access to some communities. Rescue teams used boats and helicopters to reach stranded residents, while temporary shelters were set up to house those forced to flee.

Local governments reported disruptions to electricity and water supplies, with repair crews working to restore essential services. Schools and public facilities in affected regions were closed as safety assessments continued.

Weather officials warned that further rainfall could worsen the situation, urging residents in flood prone areas to remain alert and follow evacuation instructions. The government said disaster management teams remain on high alert.

The flooding has highlighted South Africa’s vulnerability to extreme weather events, which scientists say are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate ce. Authorities emphasized the need for improved flood management and resilient infrastructure to reduce future risks.
