The House of Representatives has called for stronger enforcement of safety regulations governing the siting and operation of gas filling stations and outlets across Nigeria following a recent explosion in Lagos.

The resolution was prompted by a motion of urgent national importance moved by Hon. Adesola Samuel Adedayo, who represents the Apapa Federal Constituency under the All Progressives Congress. The lawmaker raised concerns over a gas explosion that occurred in the early hours of May 5, 2026, along Adeleye Street in Apapa.

According to him, the incident took place at a construction site behind two shops and caused extensive property damage, financial losses, and injuries to five persons, including a student who was reportedly on his way to school at the time.

He commended residents of the area and the Lagos State Fire Service for their swift response, noting that victims were promptly evacuated to nearby medical facilities, including Gbagada General Hospital, for treatment.

Lawmakers expressed concern over the increasing frequency of gas related explosions in densely populated and low income areas, warning that continued regulatory lapses could put more lives and property at risk.

As part of its resolution, the House directed relevant regulatory agencies to enforce existing guidelines on the location, construction, and operation of gas facilities nationwide. It stressed the need for strict compliance to prevent avoidable disasters.

The lawmakers also urged the National Emergency Management Agency and other relevant bos to provide immediate relief materials to victims affected by the Apapa explosion.

The House reaffirmed its commitment to improving public safety standards and ensuring accountability in the handling of hazardous facilities across the country.
