A New York City sculptor who spent $100,000 of his own money creating a lifesize monument to slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk now finds himself unable to sell the work, raising questions about political memorials, artistic intent, and the economics of commemorative art in a deeply divided America.
Sergio Furnari, an Italian born artist working in New York, crafted the steel and resin statue depicting Kirk seated with a microphone, intending to memorialize the Turning Point USA co-founder who was shot and ed during an open air campus debate at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025. Kirk, just 31 years old at the time of his death, had been engaging with students when suspect Tyler Robinson, 23, allegedly opened fire. Robinson has been charged with but has not yet entered a plea. The case continues to reverberate through both political and legal circles as the nation grapples with escalating violence targeting public figures.
Furnari insists his motivation stemmed not from political alignment but from a desire to celebrate free speech and democratic values. Speaking to media outlets, the sculptor acknowledged disagreeing with Kirk on several issues, particularly his statements about Palestine. He recalls being troubled by Kirk’s rhetoric while the activist was alive. Yet Furnari sees his work as transcending partisan politics, comparing his creative impulse to the masters of the Renaissance who immortalized figures and moments in history. He invoked Michelangelo’s Pieta and David, as well as Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, as examples of art created to commemorate significant people and moments rather than to serve narrow ideological purposes.
Financial reality has proved far harsher than artistic ambition. An online fundraiser elished to recoup material costs had raised only $8,225 as of this week, leaving Furnari facing what he describes as a financial nightmare. He expressed disappointment at the lack of support, particularly monetary backing, from those he expected might champion the project. The sculptor admitted to being surprised by what he perceives as widespread reluctance to financially support commemorative art, even among those who profess admiration for Kirk’s legacy. Adding to his troubles, Furnari recently broke his foot after tripping over tape in his studio, prompting him to wonder aloud whether the project might be cursed.
Despite the setbacks, Furnari remains determined to see his vision realized. If no buyer emerges, he plans to display the monument publicly in Times Square on September 10, marking the first anniversary of Kirk’s death. He has expressed his intention to invite New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to attend an unveiling ceremony. Furnari also revealed ambitions to recreate the statue in stainless steel, though the estimated $250,000 cost currently places that dream out of reach. He has framed the entire project as a gesture of support for Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, whom he believes has been unfairly treated by media coverage following her husband’s death.
Furnari’s struggle highlights the complicated intersection of art, politics, and commerce in contemporary America. Commemorative statues have become flashpoints in cultural debates, with monuments to historical figures regularly contested, removed, or vandalized based on shifting social values. Creating memorials to recent political figures presents even thornier challenges, particularly when those individuals remain polarizing. Furnari positioned Kirk’s assassination alongside those of John F. Kennedy, Robert F.
