Rosie O’Donnell Shares Post Wishing Death on President Trump

Comedian and actress Rosie O’Donnell sparked controversy Thursday after sharing a post to her 1.2 million social media followers that expressed a death wish toward President Donald Trump. The post, originally written by another user on Threads, read “ in there. He’s going to fall asleep in one of those meetings and never wake up,” accompanied by the hashtag “2026.” Several images of the president were included, cropped and zoomed to suggest he suffers from health problems.

By amplifying the post, O’Donnell has placed herself among a growing number of left wing voices who have publicly expressed wishes for the deaths of political opponents. Some activists have even celebrated or minimized political violence, including those who reacted with apparent approval to the September 10, 2025 assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. Critics have pointed to what they describe as cognitive dissonance among certain progressive activists who refuse to acknowledge politically motivated violence from their own side while simultaneously portraying themselves as victims of a dangerous political climate.

Just last month, O’Donnell promoted a conspiracy theory suggesting that the third assassination attempt on President Trump’s life was staged or fabricated. The comedian, who has been a vocal critic of Trump for years, made international headlines in January 2025 when she dramatically relocated to Ireland with her teenage daughter just before the presidential inauguration. O’Donnell had publicly vowed not to remain in the United States during a Trump presidency, calling the political environment intolerable.

Despite her highly publicized departure and promises to avoid America during the Trump administration, the 64 year old entertainer has quietly returned to the United States on at least two separate occasions. During her time in Ireland, O’Donnell has maintained an active presence on social media platforms, particularly TikTok, where she regularly posts commentary criticizing the Trump administration. Paradoxically, she has claimed in several videos that she has not “been watching the news,” even as her content demonstrates detailed knowledge of current American political developments.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions in American political discourse, where inflammatory rhetoric and violent imagery have become increasingly normalized across the political spectrum. While death wishes and violent fantasies targeting public figures were once considered beyond the pale for mainstream commentators, such statements now regularly appear on social media platforms with little consequence. Platform moderation policies have struggled to keep pace with the escalation, often applying rules inconsistently depending on the target and the political affiliation of the speaker.

As the 2026 midterm elections approach, political observers warn that incendiary rhetoric from celebrities and influencers may contribute to an already volatile atmosphere. Whether social media companies will take stronger action against posts promoting violence toward elected officials remains to be seen. For now, public figures like O’Donnell continue to share such content with minimal repercussions, raising questions about the boundaries of acceptable political speech in an increasingly polarized nation.
