The Senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomhole, has described the recognition of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, by former US President Donald Trump as a diplomatic victory and a proud moment for the nation.
Speaking to State House correspondents after meeting President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday, Oshiomhole said his visit was partly to extend New Year greetings and also celebrate Trump’s public tribute to Mrs. Tinubu.
He recounted that Trump, known for his blunt style, described the First Lady as “a very respectable woman, a very responsible woman, and a pastor of the largest church in Nigeria,” before inviting her to stand for recognition. Oshiomhole emphasized that the gesture was widely applauded and reflected positively on Nigeria’s image.
“Trump acknowledged not just the First Lady of Nigeria, but celebrated her as a Christian pastor and a woman who commands respect,” Oshiomhole said. He contrasted the moment with how critics might have reacted had the scenario been reversed, highlighting the national pride it generated.
The APC chieftain described the recognition as a diplomatic milestone and a symbol of religious coexistence under President Tinubu’s leadership. “Trump understands that the Nigerian President is a Muslim, but he now celebrates the fact he has a Christian wife who is also a pastor of the largest church in Nigeria. So there can be no tension between the Quran and the Bible,” he added.
Oshiomhole also urged Nigerians to unite amid national challenges, noting that while the country faces difficulties, progress is being made to address them. He stressed that such moments of international recognition should reinforce national pride and solidarity, rather than division.
The senator’s remarks underline the significance of diplomatic gestures in promoting Nigeria’s image abroad and the importance of religious harmony in national leadership.
