The Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, has called on officers of the Nigeria Police Force to uphold civility, professionalism, and respect in their dealings with citizens, emphasizing that the public remains the ultimate authority the police serve.
Disu made this known during a courtesy visit to the Lagos State Governor’s Office Correspondents in Alausa, Ikeja, where he reiterated the importance of strengthening trust between law enforcement and the community. According to him, effective policing cannot succeed without public cooperation and partnership.
Addressing officers earlier at the Rapid Response Squad base, the police chief warned against actions that could damage the reputation of the unit. He stressed that officers must remember they are funded by taxpayers and are therefore accountable to the people.
He stated that members of the public should not be seen as adversaries but as partners in maintaining law and order. He added that mutual respect between citizens and officers is key to building a safer society.
Reflecting on his previous role as commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos, Disu recalled his strong working relationship with journalists stationed within the same premises. He expressed satisfaction at reconnecting with familiar faces and acknowledged the role of the media in supporting police operations.
The visit formed part of his broader engagement with stakeholders including Babajide Sanwo Olu and senior police officials. He emphasized the need to reinforce discipline, professionalism, and respect for human rights within the force.
Responding on behalf of the journalists, George Okojie praised Disu’s leadership style, describing him as accessible and people focused, while expressing confidence in the future of policing in Nigeria.
