A close associate of Atiku Abubakar has called on Peter Obi to consider teaming up once again with the former Vice President ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The appeal was made public on Sunday, November 30, 2025, as political discussions around the next election cycle begin to intensify.
The ally, Dele Momodu, reminded Nigerians that Obi had previously served as Atiku’s running mate in the 2019 election, where the pair finished second. He said he has had multiple conversations with Obi, encouraging him to accept the role of vice presidential candidate under Atiku once more, arguing that this alliance would be the most effective way to challenge President Bola Tinubu.
Momodu warned that any delay in making a decision could hurt Obi’s political future. He also pointed out that Tinubu has already built strong political support in the South, making it harder for any southern candidate to beat him alone.
He added that if Obi chooses not to join forces with Atiku, the position of running mate might go to former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi. Momodu said Amaechi is often underestimated, but he played a key role in helping Muhammadu Buhari win the presidency in 2015.
“If Obi does not make up his mind or chooses to run alone, then I believe the mantle might fall on Rotimi Amaechi.”
Momodu stressed the urgency of the moment, saying:
“I have told Obi. There is no time.”
He explained that Tinubu, as the sitting president, has the advantage of power and influence, using it to win over governors and lawmakers.
“The person you want to dislodge is already a President. He has everything. He is either coercing or cajoling the governors and senators to join him.”
In the 2023 elections, Atiku and Obi ran on separate platforms, with Atiku representing the PDP and Obi contesting under the Labour Party. Atiku came in second, while Obi secured third place. Many political observers believe that if the two leaders join forces again, they could form a strong opposition capable of challenging Tinubu in 2027.
