Labour Party Reaffirms Leadership, Warns Julius Abure Over Legal Issues

The Labour Party (LP) has clarified that Julius Abure is merely a floor member of the party, reaffirming that Senator Nenadi Usman and Senator Darlington Nwokocha remain the National Chairman and Secretary, respectively. Both were re-appointed by the Labour Party Statutory National Executive Council (NEC) on July 18, 2025.

In a statement signed by Comrade Engr. Eragbe Anslem Aphimia, the party’s National Youth Leader, LP urged Abure to focus on his impending criminal prosecution by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice (AGF) and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for charges including perjury, forgery, and criminal conspiracy.

The statement emphasized that Abure’s tenure ended on June 8, 2024, after a five-year term that began in 2019. It also noted that Abure had no constitutional authority to act as national chairman, a role meant for Alhaji Lamidi Basiru Apapa and Mrs. Maria Lebeke, the deputy national chairmen (South and North).

The NEC appointed Senator Nenadi Usman on September 4, 2024, in line with Article 13 of the Labour Party constitution, which allows NEC to fill vacancies between national conventions. This appointment was upheld by a Supreme Court judgment on April 4, 2025, which resolved all disputes in favor of Usman and Nwokocha.

The Supreme Court also dismissed earlier court rulings that recognized Abure as national chairman, citing lack of jurisdiction. Additionally, a Federal High Court judgment on August 15, 2025, invalidated an unlawful national convention allegedly conducted by Abure in March 2024 for violating the Labour Party constitution, the Electoral Act 2022, and the Nigerian Constitution.

The party described Abure’s claims as delusional and warned against attempts to undermine the Supreme Court’s decision. It also condemned any conspiracies involving elements within INEC to impose illegality through Abure.

The statement concluded by asserting that if Abure wishes to run a monarchy, he should do so privately and not within the Labour Party.
