Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has held a high level meeting with the United States Consul General in Lagos Rick Swart, focusing on Nigeria’s democratic future and preparations ahead of the 2027 general election.
Obi revealed the engagement in a statement shared on his X platform on Tuesday, noting that both parties explored ways to strengthen bilateral relations between Nigeria and the United States. Central to the discussion was the need to ensure credible elections that are transparent, inclusive, and free from undue interference.
According to Obi, emphasis was placed on creating a political environment where all parties, particularly opposition groups, can operate freely and contribute meaningfully to governance. He stressed that a vibrant democratic space is essential for national ility and long term development.
The meeting also covered economic cooperation, with both sides examining opportunities to expand trade and investment ties. Obi expressed optimism that such collaborations could support Nigeria’s economic growth while reinforcing democratic institutions.
The talks come at a time of significant political realignment within Nigeria’s opposition landscape. Obi, alongside former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, recently moved from the African Democratic Congress to the Nigerian Democratic Congress, a shift that has reshaped political alliances ahead of the next election cycle.
The transition followed internal disputes within the ADC, including disagreements over leadership structure and strategic direction. Their move has since attracted other political actors seeking a more cohesive platform, while raising concerns about the future strength of the ADC.
