The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, on Sunday visited Kano to meet with former governor and political heavyweight Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, fueling speculation about possible political realignments ahead of future elections.
The meeting, held at Kwankwaso’s residence on Miller Road, was attended by key political figures including Seyi Makinde, Seriake son and activist Naajatu Mohammed.
The high profile gathering has triggered discussions in political circles, with some observers suggesting that Kwankwaso could consider a shift from the New Nigeria People’s Party to the African Democratic Congress.
Speaking during the annual Kwankwassiya Sallah celebration, Obi clarified that his visit was primarily to celebrate the festive occasion and show respect to Kwankwaso, while also highlighting his vision for economic revival in Kano.
“I’m here to felicitate with you on the occasion of Sallah and to pay my respect to our leader,” Obi said. “We want to rebuild Kano and restore its economic strength by reviving key industrial areas.”
He specifically referenced major industrial hubs such as Bompai and Sharada, once known for their thriving manufacturing activities, as part of a broader plan to reposition Kano as a major economic center.
The visit underscores efforts by Obi and his allies to strengthen relationships in northern Nigeria and engage influential political stakeholders. Analysts say such moves could play a significant role in shaping future alliances and electoral strategies.
Kwankwaso, who hosted the event, expressed appreciation for the visit and welcomed the spirit of unity demonstrated during the Sallah celebration.
