Nollywood actress Maureen Okpoko has made an emotional public appeal for assistance after revealing she has been battling visual impairment for the past four years. The actress, known for her work in Nigerian cinema, opened up about her condition in a heartfelt video message that has since circulated widely across social media platforms, calling on colleagues, bloggers, and the general public to support her quest for medical intervention.

In the video, Okpoko directly addressed prominent social media personalities and fellow actors, asking for both financial contributions and prayers as she seeks further treatment to restore her sight. Her appeal specifically mentioned popular blogger Tunde Ednut, social commentator VeryDarkMan, and other industry colleagues, emphasizing that any form of support, whether monetary contributions or words of encouragement, would be deeply appreciated. The vulnerability displayed in her message has struck a chord with many Nigerians who have long admired her contributions to the film industry.

Okpoko’s public disclosure follows a similar appeal by veteran actor and musician Harry B. Anyanwu, who recently took to social media to rally support for his colleague. Anyanwu, who revealed he was with Okpoko in Enugu at the time of his video, described her situation as urgent and called on the wider Nigerian film community to mobilize resources to help her access the necessary medical care. His intervention has helped amplify awareness of her condition and brought greater attention to her plight.

The case highlights a broader issue within the Nigerian entertainment industry, where many veteran actors and actresses find themselves without adequate health insurance or financial safety nets despite their contributions to the cultural landscape. While Nollywood has grown into one of the world’s largest film industries by volume, producing thousands of movies annually, questions persist about the welfare structures available to performers, particularly those who rose to prominence in earlier decades before the industry’s commercial expansion.

Okpoko’s situation is not isolated. Over the years, numerous Nollywood veterans have made similar public appeals for medical assistance, sparking conversations about the need for better healthcare provisions and pension schemes for entertainment industry workers. Some industry stakeholders have called for the elishment of cooperative societies and health insurance programs specifically tailored to actors and crew members, though progress on such initiatives has been slow.

As Okpoko’s appeal continues to gain traction online, attention now turns to whether the Nigerian film community and concerned citizens will respond with the financial support needed for her treatment. Her case serves as a reminder of the precarious circumstances many entertainers face and may renew calls for systemic reforms to protect those who have dedicated their lives to enriching Nigeria’s cultural heritage. Whether her appeal will catalyze meaningful ce in how the industry cares for its veterans remains to be seen, but for now, her immediate need for medical intervention takes priority.
