The Nigerian entertainment industry is mourning the loss of veteran Nollywood actor Chief Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, who reportedly passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2026. The Lagos State Chapter of the Actors Guild of Nigeria described the late actor as one of the notable figures whose contribution to Nigerian cinema spanned more than three decades, earning widespread recognition through his distinctive screen presence, commanding voice and dedication to telling authentic Nigerian stories.
In a statement issued on behalf of the chairman, executives and members of the guild, the AGN Lagos praised Ogogo as more than just an accomplished performer. Beyond his acting career, he was described as a mentor who influenced younger practitioners, a disciplined professional on set and a strong advocate of Yoruba culture and Nigerian values. The Director of Communications noted that his death represented a significant loss to the creative industry, stating that Ogogo represented excellence, integrity and the golden era of Nollywood.
Meanwhile, actress Bunmi Nelson has publicly expressed regret for underestimating colleague Funke Akindele’s potential during a recent interview on the ‘Talk to B’ podcast with actress Biola Adebayo. Nelson revealed that she missed significant opportunities in 2006 and 2007 when Akindele approached her for collaboration, admitting she never anticipated Akindele’s eventual success. She candidly stated that if she had known Funke would achieve such heights, she would have maintained c ties, using her experience as a cautionary tale about the dangers of looking down on others.
The AGN Lagos Chapter extended condolences to Hassan’s family, the national leadership and members of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, the wider Nollywood community and his fans worldwide. Details of plans for a befitting tribute and funeral will be announced following consultations with the deceased’s family and the national body of the guild.
