The Deputy Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Affiniki Dauda, has lost her bid to return to the Assembly after failing to secure the All Progressives Congress APC ticket during the party’s primaries.

Mrs Dauda, who represents Gurara constituency and remains the only female legislator in the Assembly, was defeated by a newcomer in the APC primary election. Her loss was part of a wider political shake up that saw 15 other lawmakers also fail to secure return tickets under the ruling party.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of the House, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, emerged unopposed to retain the APC ticket for his Magama constituency.

Mrs Dauda recently drew attention after seconding a motion moved by Senator Sani Musa endorsing Governor Muhammed Umaru Bago for a second term in office.

The outcome of the primaries means all 27 APC candidates contesting for seats in the Niger State House of Assembly are male. Reports also indicate that there is no Christian candidate among the party’s nominees for the Assembly elections.

Among those who secured APC tickets are Abdulmalik Bala Yakubu for Katcha constituency, Abubakar Suleiman Gomna for Bosso, Ahmed Mohammed for Edati, Alhassan Isah for Mashegu, Bello Bako for Rijau, Murtala Adamu Badaru for Suleja, Ndagi Zakari for Mokwa, Nasir Umar for Paikoro, Yahaya Abubakar Ahmadu for Gbako, Zubair Ismaila for Rafi, and Dogari Daje for Munya constituency.

The chairman of the APC primary committee, Danlami Mohammed Abubakar, announced the results at the party secretariat on Thursday evening.
