Uganda’s long serving leader Yoweri Museveni has been sworn in for a seventh term in office following his victory in the January 2026 presidential election.
The swearing in ceremony took place on May 12 2026 at the Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala where Museveni took his oath of office for another five year mandate continuing his decades long leadership of the East African nation.
According to official results Museveni secured 71.65 percent of the vote defeating his main opposition challenger Bobi Wine who received 24.72 percent.
The election result extends Museveni’s rule which began in 1986 making him one of the longest serving presidents in Africa. At 81 years old he continues to maintain a strong political presence in Uganda’s governance system.
Museveni who was born in 1944 in the Mbarara district began his education at Kyamate Boys School in 1953 before moving to Mbarara High School in 1959. He later attended Ntare School after his family relocated from Ntungamo in the 1960s during the British colonial period.
His long political career has been marked by both praise for ilising Uganda after years of conflict and criticism from opposition groups who accuse his government of limiting political freedoms and extending his stay in power.
Supporters of Museveni however credit him with maintaining national security and economic development over the years despite ongoing debates about democratic space and leadership succession in Uganda.
The latest inauguration reinforces Museveni’s continued dominance in Ugandan politics as the country prepares for another five years under his leadership.
