A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and publisher of Ovation Magazine, Dele Momodu, has criticised calls by some supporters of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, insisting that he must automatically emerge as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
Momodu described such demands as divisive and disrespectful to other leaders within the ADC coalition. He spoke on Thursday during a programme on Channels Television while reacting to recent comments by rights activist Aisha Yesufu and economist Prof. Pat Utomi, both allies of Obi. The duo had warned that their support for the ADC coalition could be withdrawn if Obi is not given the party’s presidential ticket.
According to Momodu, branding Obi as “the best” among ADC leaders is an insult to other experienced political figures within the coalition. He questioned the basis for describing some aspirants as superior to others, noting that the ADC is made up of individuals with diverse and impressive political backgrounds.
He listed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as one of the leading figures in the coalition, citing his eight years in office and long-standing involvement in national politics, dating back to 1993. Momodu also mentioned former Rivers State governor and ex-minister, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as well as former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, whom he described as a major intellectual asset to the party.
While acknowledging Obi’s popularity and influence, Momodu warned against elevating one aspirant above others in a coalition built on collective strength. He stressed that the ADC is not a one-man platform and that cooperation among all stakeholders is essential for success.
Momodu further dismissed threats to withdraw support from the coalition, saying no individual or group has the right to intimidate others in a democratic process. He maintained that the ADC’s presidential ticket should be determined through consensus and internal democratic mechanisms, not emotional pressure.
I think Momodu has a point. Let the best candidate emerge naturally, no shortcuts! Politics is a game of strategy.
