King Charles III Addresses Congress Amid Efforts to Repair US UK Rift

Britain’s monarch King Charles III is set to receive a full ceremonial welcome from Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday, marking a moment in efforts to mend strained relations between the United States and the United Kingdom over the Iran war.

On the second day of a four day state visit, Charles will take center stage with a rare address to Congress, becoming the first British monarch to do so since Queen Elizabeth II in 1991. His speech is expected to emphasize reconciliation and renewal, while underscoring the importance of the long standing alliance between the two nations.

The visit is unfolding with a mix of ceremony and diplomacy. Charles and Queen Camilla will be honored with a traditional ceremony featuring a 21 gun salute and military inspection. They will later meet privately with Trump and Melania Trump in the Oval Office before attending a formal state dinner at the White House.

Despite the pageantry, the visit carries significant political weight. Tensions between Washington and London have grown after Britain declined to support US military actions against Iran. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has openly criticized the conflict, drawing sharp reactions from Trump.

In his address, Charles is expected to frame the US UK relationship as one built on shared democratic values, stressing that cooperation remains vital in confronting global challenges. The speech coincides with the 250th anniversary of American independence, adding symbolic importance to the message of unity.

While the UK government hopes the visit will ease tensions, domestic opinion remains divided. Still, the royal visit represents a strategic effort to reinforce diplomatic ties at a time of geopolitical uncertainty.
