Journey Keyboardist Jonathan Cain Calls Bruce Springsteen Annoying and Bitter in Political Clash

Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain has launched a blistering on Bruce Springsteen, calling the legendary rocker an “annoying, bitter old man” and telling him to “shut up” about politics. In a podcast interview that quickly gained traction across social media, the 76 year old musician took aim at his fellow rock veteran’s outspoken political commentary, saying Springsteen should remember he was “born in the USA, so act like it.”

Cain, who describes himself as a “hard conservative,” has long been vocal about his political beliefs despite advocating that musicians should generally keep their politics off the stage. His frustration with Springsteen extends beyond recent onstage commentary about the state of America. He went so far as to reframe one of Springsteen’s most iconic hits, characterizing “Born in the USA” as a “diss” track against the country, a reading that overlooks the song’s complex critique of Vietnam War era politics that has been debated for decades.

During the interview, Cain emphasized his friendship with Ted Nugent, another outspoken conservative rocker, and acknowledged the relative isolation of right leaning voices in the music industry. “Me and Kid Rock, we’re probably on an island,” he said, referencing the limited number of major rock artists willing to publicly embrace conservative politics in an industry long associated with progressive causes.

Springsteen has indeed become increasingly vocal about political issues in recent years, particularly during his tour performances where he has offered commentary on American democracy, social justice, and political division. Known for decades as a working class champion whose songs explore the struggles of ordinary Americans, Springsteen has never shied from political themes, though his directness has intensified in recent concert appearances.

Cain’s criticism highlights the ongoing cultural divide within the rock music community, where political expression has become increasingly polarized. While many veteran rockers have used their platforms to criticize conservative politics, a smaller cohort including Cain, Nugent, and Kid Rock have pushed back against what they see as liberal orthodoxy in entertainment. Journey itself has navigated these waters carefully, with Cain being the most politically outspoken member of the currently touring lineup.

Whether this public feud will escalate or fade into the background noise of celebrity political commentary remains to be seen. What seems certain is that the generational divide in American politics has fully penetrated the world of classic rock, turning former peers into ideological opponents. As both musicians continue their respective tours and Springsteen shows no signs of moderating his political commentary, fans may need to accept that the soundtrack of their youth now comes with competing visions of what America should be.
