Jonathan Says He Will Consult Before Deciding on 2027 Presidential Contest

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said he will consult widely before taking a final decision on whether to contest the 2027 presidential election.

He made the remark in Abuja when a group of supporters visited his office to urge him to enter the race, insisting that he represents a unifying figure capable of addressing Nigeria’s current political and economic challenges.

The supporters called on Jonathan to declare interest in the election, stating that they had widespread backing across the country and urging him to obtain a nomination form from any political party of his choice. They argued that his leadership was needed to prevent what they described as a possible national decline.

In response, Jonathan emphasized the importance of peace, national ility, and credible elections, noting that democratic processes must remain free and fair to encourage citizen participation in governance.

He also stressed that political leadership is a serious responsibility, describing presidential ambition as soing that should not be treated lightly or compared to a simple contest. According to him, leadership decisions must be guided by national interest and careful reflection.

Jonathan further highlighted his experience observing elections across several African countries, using it to underscore the importance of electoral credibility and citizen engagement in the democratic process.

He noted that young people have a critical role to play in shaping Nigeria’s future through active participation in voting and civic responsibility.

The former president said he had heard the appeal from his supporters and would take time to consult broadly before making any decision regarding the 2027 presidential race.
