Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has described the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as “alive, strong, and resilient,” rejecting speculations that the party is weakening or nearing collapse.

Jonathan made the statement on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, while receiving members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), led by the party’s National Chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, at his private office in Abuja. The visit focused on internal reconciliation and strategic planning ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Emphasising the party’s enduring relevance, the former president noted that the PDP remains a cornerstone of Nigeria’s democratic journey and the only original political party formed in 1998 that is still in existence. He described the party not merely as a political organisation but as a national institution with deep roots in the country’s democratic history.

“The PDP has been a critical contributor to our democracy since 1999. I have benefited immensely from this party, having served as Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice President, and President. I am grateful and remain committed to contributing to its growth,” Jonathan said.

He urged the current leadership to place national interest and institutional development above personal ambitions, stressing that strong and le political parties are essential for the survival and consolidation of democracy in Nigeria.

Earlier, Turaki thanked Jonathan for his continued guidance and loyalty to the party, assuring him that the PDP is implementing a comprehensive “Rebirth Agenda” aimed at rebuilding, reconciling aggrieved members, and repositioning the party ahead of future elections.

“Our objective is to return power to the people and reposition the PDP as the party of the majority of Nigerians. A united PDP remains the most viable platform for a balanced and prosperous Nigeria,” Turaki stated.

Other members of the delegation included former Niger State Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, Prof. Jerry Gana, Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi, Hajiya Zainab Maina, Chief Mike Oghiadome, Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN, and other NWC members.

  • Jonathans optimism seems misplaced. PDPs decline is evident. Time for a reality check, not just empty declarations. What do you think?

  • Jonathans confidence in PDP is refreshing, but actions speak louder than words. Lets see if the party truly bounces back!

  • I disagree with Jonathans optimism. PDP needs a serious overhaul to regain relevance, not just empty declarations.
