Nigeria’s electoral body has moved to clear up widespread confusion about the function of its digital results platform, emphasizing that the system was never designed to automatically calculate election outcomes. Speaking on national television, a senior official explained that the Results Viewing Portal, known as IReV, serves purely as a public transparency tool rather than a computational mechanism for aggregating votes.
Professor Kunle Ajayi, a National Commissioner at the Independent National Electoral Commission, addressed the misconception during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Friday evening. His remarks come as the commission prepares for the upcoming governorship election in Osun State, where the digital platform will once again play a central role in displaying polling unit results to the public. Ajayi stressed that expectations of real time vote tallying through the portal represent a fundamental misunderstanding of the technology’s purpose.
According to the electoral commissioner, all results from polling units across Osun State will be uploaded to the viewing portal using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System. The commission has pledged to improve the speed and efficiency of result transmission compared to previous elections. Ajayi assured viewers that the enhanced performance would mean faster capture and upload of results immediately after they become available at each polling station, addressing criticisms of delayed uploads that have plagued past electoral exercises.
The clarification addresses a persistent source of confusion among Nigerian voters and observers who have come to expect the IReV platform to function as an automatic tallying system. Many citizens monitoring elections in real time have anticipated seeing running totals emerge as results from individual polling units appear on the portal. However, Ajayi explained that such automatic aggregation would constitute a fundamental misrepresentation of the system’s design, potentially creating what he termed a “gross trader” or misleading impression of final outcomes before proper collation procedures are complete.
Instead, the commissioner noted, interested parties including political organizations, civil society groups, media houses, and individual citizens retain the ability to independently collate and calculate totals using the publicly displayed figures from each polling unit. This crowdsourced verification approach represents one of the platform’s key transparency benefits, allowing multiple stakeholders to cross check official collation processes against publicly visible data. The critical question, Ajayi emphasized, is whether results uploaded to the viewing portal match the physical documents produced at polling units, rather than whether the system performs automatic calculations.
As Osun State prepares for its governorship election, the commission’s clarification underscores ongoing challenges in managing public expectations around electoral technology in Nigeria. The distinction between result viewing and result collation may seem technical, but it carries significant implications for how citizens monitor elections and assess their integrity.
