Howie Mandel has a soft spot when it comes to judging certain performers on America’s Got Talent, and the veteran comedian isn’t shy about admitting it. After more than a decade on the panel, Mandel confesses he consistently goes easier on stand-up comedians than any other type of act that graces the AGT stage.
The challenge comedians face is uniquely demanding compared to their fellow competitors. While aerialists soar through the air engulfed in flames and magicians conjure spectacular illusions, comedians must simply walk out and tell stories about everyday life. Mandel, who still performs roughly 200 stand-up shows annually across North America, understands this disparity intimately. He explains that aunces often struggle to appreciate the difficulty of crafting original material and eliciting genuine laughter every thirty seconds from strangers.
As Season 21 unfolds with only two comedians among the 44 acts selected for the live shows, Mandel’s support becomes even more crucial. The format pits wildly different talents against each other, forcing voters to compare acrobatic spectacle with conversational humor. This inherent imbalance weighs heavily on the comedian turned judge.
Whether a comedian ultimately claims victory this season remains uncertain, though the competition has seen several Golden Buzzer recipients from the stand-up world claim the crown in previous years.
