Nigeria’s aviation sector is set to experience a positive new development as Ibom Air prepares to start international flight operations in April 2026.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced this development after inspecting ongoing upgrades at Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo.
During a tour of the airport facilities on Wednesday with Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, the minister said the state is ahead of federal timelines in achieving full international airport status.
Keyamo revealed that all major agencies involved in international aviation, including Customs, Immigration, NDLEA, Police, DSS, Quarantine, NEMA, and other aviation authorities have reviewed the facility and are satisfied with the progress.
He noted that while earlier expectations suggested many operational gaps needed to be addressed, the inspection found only a few minor adjustments remaining. He also highlighted the near completion of a world class international terminal and a newly built Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) centre, which he called essential for international airlines.
The minister explained that the MRO facility allows foreign airlines operating in Uyo to perform routine checks before departure, giving the airport a competitive advantage and bringing it in line with global aviation standards.
Governor Eno praised Minister Keyamo for his dedication to improving Nigeria’s aviation sector and thanked President Bola Tinubu for approving the airport upgrade and releasing the necessary funds to speed up the project.
He also acknowledged the efforts of previous Akwa Ibom administrations for laying the groundwork that made this achievement possible.
