Falz Explains Why He Abandoned Legal Practice for Full Time Music Career

Folarin Falana, the Nigerian rapper and actor known professionally as Falz, has opened up about the difficult decision to step away from active legal practice as his entertainment career took off. Called to the Nigerian Bar in 2012 after studying law at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom and completing his stus at the Nigerian Law School in Abuja, the 35 year old entertainer found himself facing an impossible balancing act between two demanding professions.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Behind The Story podcast, Falz revealed that while juggling both careers seemed manageable initially, the reality of maintaining an active legal practice alongside a burgeoning music career became untenable. His growing fame in the entertainment industry began to follow him into the courtroom, creating uncomfortable situations that ultimately influenced his decision to focus entirely on music and acting.

A pivotal moment came during a routine court appearance when a judge recognized him for his activities outside the legal profession. After announcing his appearance, the judge asked pointedly whether he was not the one doing soing on the side. At the time, some lawyers already knew him as the son of renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana, while others were beginning to recognize him through his growing presence in the entertainment industry. The incident served as a wake up call about the complications his dual identity could create.

Falz explained that his increasing visibility posed practical concerns about how clients might perceive his commitment to their cases. Imagine becoming even more famous and showing up in court, he said, noting that such recognition could create unwanted distractions during legal proceedings. Clients might reasonably wonder whether a lawyer whose face was plastered across billboards and music videos could truly devote the necessary attention to their legal matters, he acknowledged.

The rapper first captured widespread attention in the music industry in 2011 with the release of his debut single, Wahz Up Guy. Since then, he has elished himself as one of Nigeria’s leading entertainers, building a reputation not just for his music but also for his acting work and social commentary. His distinctive style blends humor with sharp observations about Nigerian society, earning him a devoted following across the continent and beyond.

Falz’s journey from courtroom to concert stage reflects a broader conversation about career paths for young African professionals who possess talents spanning multiple fields. As Nigeria’s entertainment industry continues its explosive growth, creating genuine opportunities for financial success and international recognition, more trained professionals from traditional fields may face similar crossroads. His choice underscores how the creative economy now offers viable alternatives to conventional career trajectories, even for those who have invested significantly in professional qualifications like law degrees.
