The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Ajibola Basiru, has taken a swipe at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar following a viral photo from an opposition summit held in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The image, which circulated widely on X, appeared to show Atiku with his eyes closed during the high level meeting. Basiru shared the photo on his official account, captioning it with a remark suggesting that the opposition leader had fallen asleep during what he described as an important gathering.

The summit, held on Saturday, brought together several prominent opposition figures as part of ongoing efforts to build a united front ahead of the 2027 general election. Among those in attendance were Peter Obi of the Labour Party, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kwara State governor Abdulfatah Ahmed.

Participants at the meeting reportedly agreed on the need to work towards presenting a single presidential candidate to challenge the ruling party in the next election cycle. The gathering is part of broader consultations and political realignments currently shaping Nigeria’s opposition landscape.

Basiru also used the same image to respond to claims online that the ruling APC was unsettled by the opposition’s move to unite. His remarks appear to downplay the significance of the summit while reinforcing the party’s confidence ahead of the المقبلة elections.

The development highlights the intensifying political rivalry and public messaging strategies as parties begin early positioning for the 2027 presidential race.
