Fresh cracks have emerged within the ruling All Progressives Congress as disagreements over the adoption of consensus candidates continue to divide party members in Ogun and Oyo states ahead of the 2027 elections.
Supporters of former Ogun State governor Gbenga Daniel and aggrieved aspirants in Oyo State have openly rejected what they described as attempts to impose candidates under the guise of consensus arrangements.
Speaking on behalf of Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, the Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, defended the use of consensus, insisting it remains a lawful and strategic option under the Electoral Act.
According to Akinmade, consensus helps political parties reduce campaign expenses, prevent internal conflicts and strengthen unity ahead of major elections. He noted that aspirants who step down for consensus candidates are often compensated through political appointments and other opportunities.
Akinmade also rejected claims that the Ogun East Senatorial seat belongs exclusively to Daniel. He recalled that Daniel himself benefited from a consensus arrangement in the past after the late Awujale of Ijebuland reportedly convinced Senator Lekan Mustapha to withdraw from the race.
He argued that if Mustapha could step aside for Daniel, then Daniel should also respect the decision of the party leadership. He further maintained that the party has the responsibility to present its strongest candidates for the 2027 elections, adding that Governor Abiodun remains eligible to contest for the Senate seat if he chooses.
However, Daniel has maintained that he will only participate in transparent and credible primary elections. Through his media aide Steve Oliyide, the senator warned against any process with predetermined outcomes, stressing that democracy must be protected from manipulation and external interference.
In Oyo State, Oluyole Federal Constituency aspirant Gbolagade Abiodun also accused some party leaders of trying to force a consensus candidate without adequate consultation among stakeholders.
Reacting to the allegations, Oyo APC Publicity Secretary Wale Sadare denied claims of imposition and assured members that the party would conduct open and fair primaries wherever consensus fails.
