Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party have issued a strong warning that failure to resolve internal divisions could cost the party its relevance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
After months of internal crisis and legal disputes, the party is now pushing for a reset anchored on unity, reconciliation, and a credible national convention. Party stakeholders describe the moment as critical to determining whether the PDP can regain political momentum or continue to decline.
This urgency was evident in Abuja during the inauguration of the PDP 2026 National Convention Planning and Organising Committee. The committee is chaired by former Abia State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, who stressed the importance of the upcoming convention scheduled for March 29 and 30.
According to Ikpeazu, the convention represents more than a routine gathering. He described it as a decisive test of the party’s ability to overcome its recent challenges and reposition itself for future electoral success. He added that the goal is to produce a credible National Working Committee capable of leading the party to victory in 2027.
The Chairman of the National Caretaker Working Committee, Abdulrahman Mohammed, acknowledged the party’s turbulent journey but expressed confidence in its resilience. He noted that despite setbacks, the PDP has emerged stronger and more determined to rebuild.
Also speaking, Acting National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu called on aggrieved members who left the party during the crisis to return, assuring them of fairness and inclusion moving forward.
Party leaders believe a recent court ruling affirming the caretaker committee has provided a foundation for ility and renewed confidence. Meanwhile, National Organising Secretary Umaru Bature emphasized the need for discipline and commitment in the days leading to the convention.
Leaders also acknowledged the role of key figures like Nyesom Wike in sustaining the party through difficult times.
As the convention approaches, the real challenge lies in whether the PDP can deliver on its promises of unity, fairness, and credibility at a crucial political moment.
