APC Cancels Abia Governorship Zoning After Internal Backlash

The All Progressives Congress in Abia State has reversed its earlier decision to zone the governorship position to the Abia Central senatorial district ahead of the 2027 general elections, following widespread اعتراض and internal disagreements.

The controversy began after the state working committee initially announced that the governorship ticket would be reserved for candidates from Abia Central. However, the decision was met with strong opposition from key stakeholders and aspirants within the party.

Among those who criticized the move were the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, and party chieftain Mascot Uzor Kalu, both of whom argued that the zoning arrangement was unfair and could create divisions within the party.

In response to the growing tensions, the party’s national leadership stepped in to review the situation. According to a statement issued by the state publicity secretary, Uche Aguoru, the national body has now directed that all previously announced zoning arrangements be cancelled.

The directive effectively restores the status quo, allowing all interested aspirants to contest for various positions without restrictions tied to zoning. This includes positions in the State House of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate, and the governorship race.

The party leadership emphasized that aspirants are free to obtain nomination forms and participate in the electoral process, provided they meet the stipulated guidelines and deadlines set by the party.

The reversal highlights ongoing internal dynamics within the APC in Abia State as it prepares for the 2027 elections. While zoning is often used as a tool for balancing political interests across regions, the latest development suggests that consensus remains a challenge within the party.

Observers believe the decision could help ease tensions and promote inclusivity, but it also signals the need for stronger internal cohesion as the party positions itself for upcoming electoral contests.
