The Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, has vowed that the suspect accused of torturing a female student of Community Secondary School Agulu Awka with a hot electric iron will be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction.

Chuma Udeh made the declaration while addressing the suspect, Osinachi Ede, in her office in Awka. The 29 year old was taken into custody by the Anambra State Police Command on February 3 2025 for allegedly abusing and inflicting serious injuries on a 17 year old girl said to be her house help.

According to reports, the suspect allegedly used a hot pressing iron on the victim as punishment. During police interrogation, she reportedly confessed to the act.

The commissioner emphasized that prosecuting the suspect would serve as a deterrent to others who engage in child abuse. She directed that the victim, who had earlier been sent to stay with relatives, be returned to Awka, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to protecting children.

She stated that the action aligns with the vision of Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo to safeguard the welfare and safety of every child in schools across the state. According to her, the governor has shown keen interest in ensuring that no child in Anambra is subjected to abuse or inhumane treatment.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the suspect was handed over to the police by the Ministry of Education as part of efforts to uphold student safety.

Authorities have reiterated that the full weight of the law will be applied against anyone found guilty of child abuse, warning that the state will not tolerate acts that endanger the wellbeing of minors.
