Tension escalated in the Middle East on Wednesday as two rounds of air raid sirens sounded in Jerusalem following reported missile launches from Iran and Lebanon.
According to the Israeli military, two separate missile barrages were detected incoming from Iran, prompting the activation of air defence systems to intercept the threats. AFP journalists in Jerusalem reported that the sirens blared in quick succession, sending residents scrambling for shelter.
In a follow up statement, the military confirmed that several projectiles launched from Lebanon toward Israeli territory were successfully intercepted after warning sirens were triggered across central Israel. The latest escalation comes amid rising regional hostilities involving Iran, Israel, and Lebanon.
Lebanon was drawn deeper into the conflict earlier this week after the Iran backed militant group Hezbollah launched s on Israel. The group said its actions were in retaliation for the ing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei during joint United States and Israeli strikes, a development that significantly intensified the regional crisis.
Israeli authorities have not immediately disclosed the extent of damage or casualties resulting from the attempted missile strikes. However, the rapid interception of the projectiles highlights the high alert status of the country’s defence systems.
Security analysts warn that continued exces between the parties risk broadening the conflict beyond bilateral confrontations, raising fears of a wider regional war.
