The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Enoch Adeboye, has recounted a personal and humorous “rapture scare” experience while urging couples to avoid going to bed with unresolved conflicts.
Speaking during the May 2026 Holy Ghost Service at Redemption City, the cleric used the story to highlight the importance of peace and reconciliation in marriage, stressing that no one knows the exact timing of the rapture.
Adeboye narrated that during a trip to the United States, he woke up in the middle of the night and could not find his wife, Foluke Adeboye, beside him. After checking multiple rooms and finding no trace of her, he said fear gripped him.
“I was trembling and sweating. I thought she had been taken and I was left behind,” he told the congregation, drawing laughter.
The moment of panic, he explained, lasted until he suddenly remembered that his wife had not accompanied him on that particular trip. He credited the realization to divine help, which brought relief.
Despite the humorous tone, Adeboye said the experience reinforced a serious lesson about maintaining harmony in marriage. Referencing biblical teachings about the rapture, he warned that unresolved conflicts between couples could have spiritual implications.
He stressed that he and his wife have maintained a long standing practice of settling disagreements before going to bed, a habit he believes has sustained their marriage since 1967.
According to him, “the sun must not go down on your anger,” urging couples to prioritise forgiveness and understanding in their relationships.
Adeboye added that his nightly prayer reflects this belief, asking God not to separate him and his wife should the rapture occur unexpectedly.
The cleric concluded by encouraging families to embrace peace, communication, and mutual respect as essential foundations for lasting relationships.
