A consortium led by British Indian millionaire Amit Bhatia and including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has acquired approximately 38 percent of English Premier League giants Liverpool FC from Fenway Sports Group, according to reports from the Athletic. The deal, initially characterized as a one third purchase by 1892 Holdings, represents a significantly larger stake than first announced and includes an option for the consortium to acquire a controlling interest within the next 12 months, though no formal commitment exists.
Jeff Bezos, the fourth richest person globally with an estimated net worth of $256 billion, makes his debut sports team investment through this transaction. The consortium also features Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. Bezos had previously been linked with potential purchases of NFL franchises including the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders before entering the football world. Bhatia, son in law of Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, stepped away from his 18 year tenure as Queens Park Rangers co-owner once his Liverpool involvement became public.
FSG purchased Liverpool for £300 million in 2010 and previously sold a minority stake of approximately three percent to Dynasty Equity three years ago. Liverpool opens their Premier League campaign at Newcastle, seeking to rebound from a disappointing fifth place finish last season that resulted in managerial upheaval despite previous success.
The investment positions Liverpool for potential squad strengthening as they navigate a transitional period under new ownership structure.
