A United States lawmaker, Riley Moore, has criticised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alleging that it has not met conditions attached to US security assistance to Nigeria.

Moore, who represents West Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District, expressed his concerns in a post shared on social media platform X on Wednesday. In his statement, he called on US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to take the issue into account when making decisions on future funding allocations.

He stated that, in his view, the Tinubu administration had not complied with the requirements set by the US appropriations committee regarding security assistance. He further urged that this be considered in the administration of both the FY26 and FY27 US federal budget cycles.

These budget cycles determine how foreign assistance, including military and security support, is allocated to partner nations such as Nigeria.

US security assistance to Nigeria typically includes military training, intelligence sharing, provision of equipment, and collaboration on counter terrorism operations. These programmes are designed to support Nigeria’s efforts in addressing insurgency, banditry, and other forms of violent crime.

However, such assistance is usually subject to conditions, including compliance with human rights standards, accountability in the use of funds, and demonstrable progress in improving security outcomes.

Moore’s comments add to previous criticisms he has made regarding the effectiveness of US military aid to Nigeria, particularly in relation to ongoing security challenges in parts of the country.

The Nigerian government has not yet issued an official response to the latest remarks.
