US Embassy in Abuja Temporarily Closes Amid Potential Protests

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has announced the temporary closure of its Abuja office for routine business due to concerns over possible protests in the Federal Capital Territory. The closure was confirmed on Thursday through the embassy’s official X account as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of staff and visitors.

According to the notice, the embassy will remain closed for routine services until Monday, March 9, 2026. The decision affects both visa applicants and individuals seeking American Citizen Services (ACS), with previously scheduled appointments moved to new dates next week.

Visa appointments originally planned for March 4 and March 5 have been rescheduled, while ACS appointments set for March 5 have also been postponed. The embassy advised affected applicants to check their email inboxes or log into their AVITs accounts for updated appointment dates. Individuals who do not see a new appointment date were instructed to contact the consular section through the Visa Navigator platform for assistance.

The embassy emphasized that members of the public should continue monitoring its official website and social media channels for further updates and information regarding appointment schedules.

In its official statement, the embassy said the temporary closure was a proactive measure in light of potential protests in Abuja. The announcement comes amid heightened security awareness and reflects ongoing efforts to protect both embassy personnel and visitors while maintaining public safety.

Applicants are encouraged to follow instructions carefully and remain informed of any further ces to appointments. The embassy reaffirmed its commitment to resuming normal operations once the situation ilizes.
