Nigerian comedian and former Big Brother Naija housemate DeeOne has stirred controversy after claiming that a large number of protests in Nigeria are politically motivated.
Speaking on a podcast by Vanguard on April 21 2026, DeeOne alleged that about 90 percent of protests in the country are sponsored by political actors rather than being purely driven by citizens’ concerns.
According to him, influential individuals often operate behind the scenes, funding demonstrations to promote specific agendas or discredit opponents. He argued that this trend makes it increasingly difficult to distinguish genuine grassroots movements from those orchestrated for political gain.
“There’s always an agenda behind most of them,” he said during the discussion.
His remarks have since generated mixed reactions across social media, with some Nigerians agreeing that political interference plays a role in organised protests. Others, however, strongly disagreed, pointing to widespread economic hardship, insecurity, and public frustration as key drivers of demonstrations.
One social media user, identified as NaijaCitizenX, criticised the claim, arguing that it downplays the lived realities of many citizens. The user stated that hunger, rising costs, and dissatisfaction with governance are sufficient reasons for people to take to the streets without political sponsorship.
