Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has issued a pointed challenge to former presidential candidate Peter Obi, asserting that his position as a minister carries more weight than any campaign credential when it comes to discussing infrastructure development. Speaking to journalists at a construction site on Sunday, Umahi defended the ongoing projects under the Tinubu administration while dismissing suggestions that only presidential candidates possess the authority to engage in substantive policy discussions.
The minister revealed that he had previously proposed a debate with Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, to discuss his current work on infrastructure projects. According to Umahi, Obi declined the invitation on the grounds that Umahi is not a presidential candidate himself. Rejecting this reasoning, Umahi insisted that as a key member of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, he is effectively on the ballot whenever the president seeks support for his policies and programs. His commitment, he emphasized, stems from a determination to see critical infrastructure projects completed rather than abandoned due to political transitions.
Umahi did not mince words in asserting his credentials relative to those of the former Anambra State governor. He questioned the significance of being a presidential candidate, suggesting that there are different levels of political achievement and that his own standing surpasses that of a mere candidacy. Drawing on his academic background, Umahi pointedly referred to himself as a professor with specialized knowledge in infrastructure development, implying that Obi would benefit from an education on the subject rather than the other way around.
The Works Minister also took aim at what he characterized as superficial criticism of government projects. He dismissed those who visit construction sites only to complain that roads are in poor condition without acknowledging the ongoing work or offering constructive alternatives. Using a colorful metaphor, he compared such critics to a turtle that remains hidden in its shell until the day it is released, suggesting a lack of practical engagement with the challenges of infrastructure development.
