U.S. Treasury Secretary Says Tariff Authority Rests With President Amid Metals Policy Debate

United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that final decisions on tariffs, including those affecting imported metals, rest solely with President Donald Trump, as debate continues within the administration over trade policy direction. His remarks came amid discussions about potential adjustments to duties on steel and aluminum that have drawn reactions from domestic manufacturers and foreign partners.

Bessent noted that while the Treasury Department provides economic analysis and policy recommendations, statutory authority over tariff measures remains with the president. He emphasized that trade tools are being evaluated in the context of national economic security, industrial competitiveness, and supply chain resilience.

Industry groups have offered mixed responses, with some domestic producers supporting continued protections and downstream manufacturers warning of higher input costs. International trading partners have also expressed concern about possible revisions, signaling that retaliatory measures could be considered if new restrictions are imposed.

Economists suggest that any shift in metals tariffs could influence broader trade negotiations and impact inflation dynamics. The administration has indicated that it aims to balance protecting strategic industries with maintaining le global trade relationships.

Further clarity is expected following internal consultations as policymakers weigh economic data and geopolitical considerations.
