US President Donald Trump has called on Australia to grant asylum to the visiting Iranian women’s football team following an incident in which the players refused to sing Iran’s national anthem during a match in Australia. Speaking on his social media platform Truth Social on Monday, Trump described Australia’s potential decision to send the team back to Iran as a “terrible humanitarian mistake.”

Trump warned that returning the players could put them in grave danger. “Australia is making a terrible humanitarian mistake by allowing the Iran National Woman’s Soccer team to be forced back to Iran, where they will most likely be ed,” he wrote.

He directly addressed Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, urging him to provide asylum to the athletes. “Don’t do it, Mr. Prime Minister, give ASYLUM. The US will take them if you won’t,” Trump added, emphasizing America’s willingness to offer refuge to the women.

The Iranian women’s football team has drawn international attention over recent disputes about human rights and freedom of expression in Iran. Refusing to sing the national anthem is viewed as a protest against restrictions on women in sports and broader societal limitations.

Trump’s statement adds to growing international pressure on Australia to protect the team and reflects ongoing US engagement on human rights issues involving athletes abroad. Observers note that the situation highlights the intersection of sports, diplomacy, and humanitarian concerns, as governments navigate the responsibilities of protecting visiting athletes while respecting international law.

The outcome of Australia’s decision remains closely watched, with the potential for the US to step in if asylum is not granted.
