A tragic road accident occurred on Thursday at Eleko Junction along the Lekki Ajah Expressway when a truck laden with granite crushed a Toyota saloon car, ing the driver and critically injuring his wife.
The crash happened in the early hours of the day, leaving medical personnel at an undisclosed hospital battling to save the life of the female passenger, who is believed to be the deceased’s spouse.
Preliminary investigations by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority revealed that the truck driver, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, was travelling from the Epe axis at high speed when the vehicle reportedly suffered brake failure. The truck subsequently veered off its lane near Eleko Junction and rammed into the Toyota car heading from Ajah towards Epe.
According to the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, the impact caused the truck to topple onto the smaller vehicle, trapping the driver inside the wreckage. Personnel of LASTMA and the Federal Road Safety Corps, with assistance from bystanders, rescued the victims. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while his wife sustained life threatening injuries and was rushed for urgent medical treatment.
The truck driver reportedly fled immediately after the crash. Operatives of the Akodo Police Division secured the area during rescue and recovery operations. The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare Oki, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and wished the injured woman a speedy recovery, reiterating the agency’s commitment to enforcing traffic laws.
In a related development, a tanker carrying 33000 litres of fuel caught fire around Ile Zik inward Magboro along the Lagos Abeokuta Expressway. The blaze was contained through a joint effort by LASTMA and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and traffic was temporarily diverted before normal flow resumed.
