Tinubu Rejects Appeals Backing Desmond Elliot Fourth Term Bid

The bid by Desmond Elliot to secure a fourth term in the Lagos State House of Assembly has suffered a major setback following reported resistance from Bola Tinubu.

Presidency sources revealed that several influential figures approached the President at different times to seek his support for Elliot’s ambition but their efforts were unsuccessful. Tinubu was said to have consistently declined the requests insisting on respect for internal party democracy.

The President reportedly stood by the decision of Surulere APC stakeholders who have endorsed Barakat Odunuga Bakare as Elliot’s preferred replacement. The move is part of a broader push to encourage gender inclusion and promote new leadership within the constituency.

Sources indicated that individuals including a retired general a serving minister and other political allies were sent to present Elliot’s case but Tinubu’s position remained unced. He reportedly emphasised that the will of the people and party structures must be respected.

Tinubu was also said to have reaffirmed his confidence in Femi Gbajabiamila describing him as a key political leader in Surulere whose influence and structure should not be undermined. According to him the outcome of the party primaries would ultimately determine who has genuine grassroots support.

The President further noted that direct primary elections would provide a fair platform for all aspirants including Elliot to test their popularity without external interference.

Despite the setback sources suggest Elliot may still pursue last minute efforts to revive his chances ahead of the Surulere 1 State Assembly primary scheduled for May 20 2026.

Meanwhile the Surulere Accountability Front has backed the call for new representation describing Elliot’s 12 years in office as unsatisfactory and urging constituents to embrace ce.

The development highlights ongoing political realignments within Lagos as parties prepare for upcoming elections with increasing emphasis on internal democracy and grassroots participation.
