The Minister designate for Power Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe has dismissed reports suggesting he promised to fix Nigeria’s electricity grid within three months, describing the claims as a misrepresentation of his remarks during his Senate screening.
In a statement released on Thursday via his spokesperson Adeola Adelabu and shared on X, Tegbe clarified that he never gave any specific three-month timeline for resolving the country’s long standing power challenges.
According to the statement, Tegbe explained during his Senate screening on May 6 2026 that reforms in the power sector require careful diagnostics stakeholder consultations and phased implementation rather than fixed short term promises.
He noted that while initial efforts toward ilising the national grid would begin within his first 100 days in office broader structural reforms such as improving gas supply strengthening metering systems and enhancing sector credibility could take up to one year.
Tegbe was quoted as assuring lawmakers that Nigerians would begin to see visible improvements in the power sector under his leadership but stressed that sustainable reform would take time and coordinated action.
He also pledged to prioritise ilisation of the national grid modernisation of electricity infrastructure improved commercial frameworks and stronger accountability across the power value chain.
On tariff reforms the minister designate said policies would be designed to protect vulnerable households while ensuring sustainability investor confidence and overall efficiency in the sector.
Tegbe further expressed willingness to engage with the media and stakeholders to ensure accurate reporting and better public understanding of ongoing and future reforms in the power sector.
His appointment followed a recent cabinet reshuffle by President Bola Tinubu which also saw ces within the Ministry of Power leadership.
