The Transmission Company of Nigeria says it has recorded 40 cases of vandalism on its power infrastructure since the beginning of 2026, noting that the figure represents a reduction compared to previous years.

The company made this known during a sensitisation programme organised by its Lagos Region in Itori, Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State. Officials attributed the decline to stronger community engagement, increased surveillance, and cooperation with local residents.

According to the Transmission Company of Nigeria, a total of 276 cases of tower vandalism were recorded between 2022 and 2025, highlighting the persistent threat to electricity infrastructure across the country. However, it said the current year has shown improvement, with fewer reported incidents due to proactive measures.

The company explained that it has adopted community based security strategies, including hiring and supporting local vigilantes to protect transmission towers. It also said incentives are being provided to farmers in host communities to encourage protection of infrastructure and reporting of suious activities.

Officials noted that sensitisation campaigns are being carried out regularly to educate residents on the dangers of vandalising power installations, building under transmission lines, and excavating near transmission towers.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria also confirmed collaboration with security agencies, including the Office of the National Security Adviser and civil defence operatives, to track and arrest suspects involved in vandalism.

Community leaders in Itori praised the initiative and called for more frequent awareness campaigns, while security officials warned that vandalism is a criminal offence that can lead to imprisonment and serious economic consequences, including power outages.

Residents were urged to remain vigilant and report suious activities to security authorities to protect critical national infrastructure.
