Taiwan’s political landscape is set for a major showdown as registration for local elections closed on Saturday, with 81 candidates officially entering the race. The Democratic Progressive Party and Kuomintang have each nominated 19 candidates for local leadership positions, signaling intense competition across the island nation.

The stakes couldn’t be higher. According to reports from major Taiwan dailies on September 5, 2026, the DPP is mounting an aggressive campaign to capture New Taipei, traditionally a contested battleground. Meanwhile, the KMT is setting its sights on Kaohsiung, a city long considered a DPP stronghold.

Beyond electoral politics, Taiwan’s energy sector is undergoing significant transformation. The Taichung Power Plant announced plans to dismantle two coal-fired units first, with the chimney area land scheduled for handover in 2029. President Lai is also pushing ambitious plans to position Taiwan as a regional Asian asset hub, diversifying the economy beyond its renowned semiconductor industry.

What remains to be seen is whether voters will prioritize economic development or environmental concerns. Financial markets appear optimistic, with analysts highlighting 16 stocks expected to drive broader market gains, backed by strong foreign and local institutional buying. The campaign season ahead promises heated debates and closely watched contests.
