Sambisa Forest Size Equals Belgium, Hampers Hostage Rescue Efforts Says Defence Minister

Nigeria’s Defence Minister, General Christopher Musa (retd.), has revealed that the sheer size of Sambisa Forest presents a major obstacle to rescuing kidnapped citizens. The forest spans an area equivalent to Belgium, making swift interventions nearly impossible when terrorists strike.

Speaking during a recent television interview, Musa explained that security forces have successfully rescued numerous victims in recent weeks. Yet the challenge remains daunting. “Sambisa Forest is as big as Belgium, as a country,” he stated, pushing back against critics who oversimplify the operational difficulties faced by troops.

The minister described how kidnappers exploit Nigeria’s vast forest networks, which stretch from Burkina Faso and Benin Republic into Nigerian territory. By the time authorities receive abduction reports, criminals have already vanished into dense woodland. How can troops track militants across terrain this massive?

Musa pointed to a recent Kwara State operation where forces successfully rescued victims by cutting off terrorists’ escape routes and supply lines. He also warned state governors against distributing motorcycles as palliatives, noting some vehicles could end up enhancing terrorist mobility.

The minister’s remarks have sparked intense online debate, with Nigerians questioning whether enough resources are being deployed to tackle the security crisis.
